Information about special school reception places for September 2025.
School admissions for mainstream school places for children starting Reception are published on 16 April each year.
If your child is undergoing an assessment of their education, health and care needs (sometimes called an EHC Needs Assessment or EHCNA), our aim is to name and confirm their school placement on 16 April too. If the request for a EHC Needs Assessment has been received after 1st January 2025, the assessment might not have been completed due to the length of the assessment process (which is 20 weeks). If this is the case, your school placement will be confirmed after the assessment process has finished.
We have continued to expand the number of school places that we have in special schools and specialist provision. There does continue to be a demand for specialist places that we can’t always meet straight away. When the EHC Needs Assessment has been completed, and we have not been able to secure a suitable placement, we will either name your child’s current early years setting for now and/or name ‘Specialist Setting’ by type from September and continue to work with you to secure a suitable placement for your child.
We are doing lots of things to increase the number of special school places and specialist provision we have in È«¹ú̽»¨ which is described more here: SEND provision planning. We are also working with independent schools to provide places for children if this is appropriate.
We are committed to providing children with the right school placement and provision as soon as practicably possible and will be keeping you and your child’s current early years setting or school regularly updated.
